What's inside Slack

  1. Overview of the Slack App Home

The App Home is a private, one-to-one space shared between a user and a granular permission Slack app. It consists of three possible tabs:

    • Home tab: A fully customizable space using Block Kit layouts and interactivity.
    • Messages tab: The standard app-user conversation interface.
    • About tab: Descriptive information about the app.

Note: App Home is not available for apps created with the Deno Slack SDK or workflows.

  2. Overview of the Slack Events API

The Events API allows Slack apps and bots to respond to activities in Slack by having Slack send event notifications to the app. Developers can choose between two delivery methods: designating a public HTTP endpoint or using Socket Mode. The API is designed for near real-time event reception and includes automatic retries for failed deliveries.
  3. Overview of Slack Block Kit framework

Block Kit is a UI framework used to create app layouts on Slack surfaces such as Home tabs, messages, and modals. It consists of three main components:

    • Blocks: Visual components that form the layout.
    • Block Elements: Interactive components (e.g., buttons, menus) contained within blocks.
    • Composition Objects: Objects that define text, options, or other features within blocks and elements.

    Constraints:

    • Messages: Maximum of 50 blocks.
    • Modals and Home tabs: Maximum of 100 blocks.
  4. Overview of Run on Slack Infrastructure (ROSI)

Run on Slack Infrastructure (ROSI) is the hosting environment for Slack apps built with the Deno Slack SDK. It allows developers to build and execute custom workflows directly within Slack without managing their own servers. The architecture is based on the Deno runtime (JavaScript/TypeScript) and AWS infrastructure, utilizing AWS Lambda for compute and AWS S3 for secure code storage via pre-signed URLs.
  5. Overview of Slack SCIM API endpoints

The Slack SCIM API is RESTful and uses different endpoint URLs than other Slack APIs. It supports both v1.1 and v2.0. The API provides endpoints for managing Service Provider Configurations, Resource Types, Schemas, Users, and Groups.
  6. Overview of Sign in with Slack (SIWS) links

Sign in with Slack (SIWS) links allow users to share their Slack identity with your application when they click a link from your service. This process utilizes the OpenID Connect (OIDC) standard to transmit user identity information. Note that SIWS links are a paid feature; interested parties should contact partnersupport@slack-corp.com.
  7. Overview of Slack Legal Holds API

The Legal Holds API allows administrators to define policies to retain customer-created content for specific entities (custodians). These features are exclusively available to Slack workspaces on an Enterprise plan. All POST requests to the Legal Holds API must send input as application/x-www-form-urlencoded data.
  8. Overview of Slack Canvases

Canvases are documents built into Slack that can either be attached to a channel or exist independently. They are used for onboarding, feedback instructions, incident coordination, and other collaborative documentation. Canvases can be managed via the Slack API or built-in functions using the Deno Slack SDK. Note that Block Kit is currently not supported in canvases.
  9. Overview of Slack Modals

Modals are focused surfaces within Slack used to collect data from users or display dynamic and interactive information. They enable brief but deep interactions with apps and are constructed using the visual and interactive components available in Block Kit.
  10. Overview of Node Slack SDK packages

The Node Slack SDK is a collection of single-purpose packages designed for building performant, secure, and scalable Slack apps. Depending on the API functionality required, use the following packages:

    • Web API: Use @slack/web-api to send data to or query data from Slack using over 200 methods.
    • OAuth: Use @slack/oauth to set up the V2 OAuth authentication flow.
    • Incoming Webhooks: Use @slack/webhook to send notifications to a single channel selected during installation.
    • Socket Mode: Use @slack/socket-mode to listen for incoming messages and events via WebSocket.
